Antimony leaching from PET
« on: March 13, 2007, 11:51:52 AM »
Contamination of Bottled Waters with Antimony Leaching from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Increases upon Storage
Shotyk, W.; Krachler, M.
Environ. Sci. Technol.; (Article); 2007; 41(5); 1560-1563.  DOI

I was recently doing my periodic skimming of journal articles.  I'm amazed that the PET industry allows as high as 150-200 ppm residual antimony in PET bottles used for the beverage industry (numbers from the above article).  Any insiders on the PET industry that can elaborate on whether this is something for concern?

I personally don't trust hardly any plastics due to plasticizers and flame retardents leaching out.  There is some speculation in the most recent C&EN that it's all these very low-concentration toxic chemicals that we put into our environment that are causing cancer, etc.  It certainly wouldn't surprise me at all.
