Tribal Phosphoessence
« on: April 29, 2007, 11:07:14 AM »
I curious if anyone knows of a particular material(s) that when combined and shaken, say within a rattle, would produce light and in a pitch black room glow.  It specifically would have to be caused by the shaking as opposed to absorbing light.  Can phosphorus do that and if so what kind of combination of materials would be needed?

I think the term you're looking for is triboluminescence.
Wintergreen lifesavers do this if you bite into them in the dark.  Maybe you could try shaking them?

Excellent and how interesting the similarity.  I was immediately able to google more pertinent information with your help with the term.  Perhaps someone else can shed more light on chemical mixtures that can produce light through friction.

This is actually what I was looking for reference to:

Thanks.
