test for Covalent Network substance vs Ionic substance
« on: July 26, 2010, 07:01:25 AM »
Hi folks,

I'm trying  to determine how to test the above 2 substances and workout which is which.
An ionic substance has a metal in it. Maybe it weighs more or is magnetic?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Covalent network solids will have a significantly higher melting point than ionic solids.  Also, when you melt ionic solids, the "melt" should conduct electricity.

One thing you can consider is that ionic substances usually conduct electricity in aqueous solutions (of course there are exceptions like precipitation).
