Simple question about electons per shell...
« on: May 17, 2007, 02:39:33 PM »
Hello,

Could someone clarify this for me...

I've been given conflicting answers to how many electrons each shell can hold, on one hand I've been told:

Shell 1 = 2   Shell 2 = 8   Shell 3 = 8

On the other hand I've also been told:

Shell 1 = 2  Shell 2 = 8   Shell 3 = 18

Thank you!

I never really payed much attention to how many e- occupy each n level.

I guess I put more focus on subshells.

Along the same path as Borek, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_electron_configuration_table. Leads to some interesting reading.
