For the past quarter Chemical Forums has raked in more visits than the website for the Royal Society of Chemistry as monitored by Compete. A graph is shown below.



What does it mean for the future of chemical communities, when a small group of chemists can bring in more visits/activity than a major publishing-house/professional-network? I'm not going to be bold enough to venture, but I will say RSC needs to do a much better job with their web-presence program.

Although, this is a nice milestone for Chemical Forums, I won't be satisfied until we're beating ACS. Which, we can accomplish by simply increasing our total visits by 4-fold.



Fair Caveat: Compete uses American centric rankings for their web analytics, but it is still a nice accomplishment none the less.

I don't know how these things are calculated though, so maybe some traffic monitors are more reliable than others.

Unfortunately, Alexa only tells you which websites are visited the most by people who have installed the Alexa toolbar. Compete.com uses their own toolbar, but also ISP provider information and mixes in demographic data to give the best picture of how well websites "truly" compare.

The main problem with Compete.com is that it ignores traffic from Europe or other countries and will only consider traffic from America. So, that would account for the marked decrease in the RSC's total traffic when compared to Chemicalforums.com. The headline of this post was meant to be slightly sensational and get people to click and read the article. Obviously, from Alexa data (international + America) RSC's audience is quite large.
