Help with Acids and bases
« on: May 28, 2007, 12:04:58 PM »
My teacher recently gave our class a take home test and two of the problems were not in oru notes so if you could help me solve this please do.

    1.)A weak acid has a K of 5.9 x 10^-13. If the acid is HSO3 -, the equilibrium concentration of So3  - is 1.96 x 10^-7 M, ph is 6.95, what is the equilibrium concentration of HSO3?

2.) A) Give the Conjugate acid of CH3NH2
         B) Give the conjugate base of NH3

thanks in advance for the help

For future reference, the Forum Rules say that you need to show your attempts at answering your questions before we answer them.  However, I can give you some hints:

    1.)A weak acid has a K of 5.9 x 10^-13. If the acid is HSO3 -, the equilibrium concentration of So3  - is 1.96 x 10^-7 M, ph is 6.95, what is the equilibrium concentration of HSO3?

Look up the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation in your chemistry text or in wikipedia.

2.) A) Give the Conjugate acid of CH3NH2
         B) Give the conjugate base of NH3

In general, you find the conjugate base of something by taking away a hydrogen, and you find the conjugate acid by adding a hydrogen.

I thank you for the help.. but the reason as to why i just stated the problem with no attempts at trying to solve it was because i had no idea how to solve it. So i just asked.

but thanks again for the link it helped me alot
