multistep with Grignard (fixed - can now load)
« on: June 07, 2007, 03:01:44 AM »
hello,

I am wondering if this way is possible to get the desired prodcut that is given. The 2 structures that are given, I've drawn in red. the ones that are in black is my try at this question. I know that there could be other perhaps "better" ways, but I would like to know if my try is possible, like is it also 100% correct as well?

Thank you!

for the first step, I added the grinard, but without H+. I know this way works for sure : 1. PhMgBr 2. H+ workup, H+ heat, H+ and CH3OH.

but I'm not sure if I can do it the way I've drawn above.
thanks!

In the last step in acidic condition for ether synthesis rather elimination of water will take place in this case

I am agree with AWK's viewpoint that elimination of water have precedence over etherization. There is another way ,May be it work well:

But maybe it's possible to convert 2-phenylpropan-2-ol to its alkoxide and then carry out Williamson reaction (with methyl iodide).

Or perhaps diazomethane?

I think Neecze is right. The best pathway is what is been choosen initially.Only thing is that the second step would be Williamson synthesis. this will give the best possible yield and is best as far as the rate of reaction is concerned.
