Test for Chloride ions in Aqueous solution
« on: January 04, 2005, 06:41:53 AM »
I have an aqueous solution containing sulfate ions, what would be a diffinitive test for chloride ions without getting a false postive from the sulfate ions?
Plz help..

Test the sample with acidified silver nitrate. A white ppt of silver chloride is form. The silver sulphate is soluble.

You may use an ion chromatography with conductivity detector and a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate with suitable resin column to quantify the chloride and sulphate.
