Analysis of NaCN/NaCl
« on: June 28, 2007, 12:55:18 AM »
Hi all,
I have a mixture og sodium cyanide and sodium chloride. Now I want to analyze the sample for quantitative estimation of NaCN and NaCl but I am not getting any proper method. Using silver nitrate i guess will not be appropriate as it will detect combined chloride and cyanide.
Can anybody suggest me some other method or reference.
Regards,

I feel that the former meant to that you should use titation by different potential

I donĀ“t remember exactly about titration methods, but if you have a good equipped laboratory, here are two options that will work well but are a quite expensives.
1 - You may buy an cyanide specyfic electrode. I have one and you can ask me how it works.
2 - In the Standard Methods for analysis of water and wastewater (20th ed.) you will find a standard method to separate the CN from the solution. YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFULL because the method acidify the sample in a closed system and then collect the CN in an alkaline solution. This is the method used to measure total CN in water. If you have a concentrated sample, probably you must dilute it before. You can assemble all the distillation system with glass devices, and a vaccum pump operating under draft chamber. In the collected sample (just NaOH and NaCN), you may use any traditional cuantification method (titration, UV, electrode or other).

I hope it may help you.
