Well, it depends what bond you want to activate. You can activate C-H bond or for example M-C (where M is a metal) bond. In general, in my opinion, activation means to make the bond weaker so it can react under some conditions. Normally, for example, C-H bond in ligand won't react, but if you introduce some metal inside it can react easily and so on. You can also think about activation of small molecules like O2 or even N2 by organometallic (or in general coordination) compound.
