reactions of main group organometallic compounds
« on: May 05, 2014, 11:52:39 AM »
I would like to ask what is the product in the following reactions:
1. [AlEt2Cl]2 + 2LiH ?
in this reaction, i am not sure whether [AlEt2H]2 will be formed, as i am not sure whether hydrogen bridging is stable or not for the product.

2. Ga2H6 + excess HCl?
in this reaction, i am not sure whether an acid-base reaction will occur... but Ga2H6 is an acid, will it undergo neutralisation with HCl? or Cl bridging will be formed to replace the hydrogen bridging?

Hope you guys can help me! >_<

I think the first reaction will be some complex hydride like
LiAlEt2ClH

Why? How can you predict the product?

I would say "experience" but I cant call myself experienced chemist.
It could also be
AlEt2Cl + 2LiH  :rarrow: LiAlEt2H2 + LiCl

Im  not realy sure about the product Im just comparing it to similar systems like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_aluminium_hydride#Preparation

but is it a hydride reaction, not an organometallic reaction?
actually, i am comparing with this reaction:
Al2Cl6 + 6RLi --> Al2R6 + 6LiCl
