metallic radii of 2nd and 3rd row of transition metals
« on: August 26, 2007, 03:39:12 AM »
why does the metallic radii of the 2nd and 3rd row of transition metals in the same group have very similar metallic radii?

This phenomenon is due to a phenomenon known as the Lanthanide contraction.  Basically, the fact that electrons in the 4f subshell are very weakly shielding causes atomic radii to contract dramatically across the lanthanides.  This leads to the 3rd row transition metals having radii which are much smaller than expected.
