Manganese Poisoning?
« on: August 26, 2007, 01:36:18 AM »
Does anybody know how likely it is that manganese can be released into the air by mixing aqueous MnO2 and H2O2? I had the idea to create oxygen this way because the world's air sucks IMO. But then I got a headache and muscle spasm in one arm and it kinda freaked me out. I suppose these symptoms could be for other reasons though.

Haha, I love your reasoning  ;D

Anyway I severely doubt that you're creating dangerous levels of Mg this way.  Ater looking at the wikipedia article it seems manganese poisoning comes over chronic exposure from activities like welding (but I guess it is Wikipedia, so y'know)

I guess if you really think that's it it may be good to wear a mask, or do it under a fume hood.  Better yet, I'm sure you could just go buy a tank of oxygen!

Sounds like oxygen poisoning to me.

So you're worried about inhaling manganese, but you're completely comfortable with breathing gases out of your reaction flask. Not to mention H2O2 spray, that could give you chemical pneumonia...

Please be careful with chemicals, they're not toys! And pure oxygen is TOXIC!!!
