Nucleophility of halogens - Please answer
« on: September 30, 2007, 06:18:09 PM »
Hi!!!

Why does a F-F bond so weak but Methyl fluoride or benzyl fluoride bond is so strong??? Does it something with carbon - halogen bond that differs from halogen - halogen bond???

Plase help me because this is a problem I cannot solve!!!

Think about electronegativities and how polar each of the bonds in your examples are

So are you telling me that the C-F bond is more polar than F-F bond??? But why???

To think of it simply F wants more electron density which carbon is willing to share.  Two fluorine have conflicting interest and the energy required to break the F-F bond is favored by finding another less polar element to covalently bond with.  The C-F bond is more polar because electron density is not evenly distributed as in F-F.
