Hey guys!
I have a question on my homework that I am having trouble with. It reads...

A 12.5 ml NaOH solution (d = 1.10 g/ml, specific heat = 4.10 J/goC) absorbs 1.674 kJ. The temperature of the NaOH solution will increase by _________.


I have no idea where to start, this is homework so I want to be able to know how to set it up for the tests! Please help me if you can. Thanks!

Since D = m/v , The mass of the solution is 13.75g. The specific heat = 4.10 J/g oC. The heat is 1.674 kJ.

(mass of substance) x (Spec Heat) x (Change temp) = Heat

13.75g x 4.10 x (change in temp) = 1.674kJ

change in temp=    1.674
                      (13.75)x(4.10)


change in temp =   1674     =  29.694 C o
                             56.375 

This is the answer I continue getting.  I know it is not correct because the instructor gave us 4 answers it could be.  14.8, 18.0, 9.2, 14.2
14.8 looks suspicious to me as it is nearly half of what I got the answer to be. Can anyone please show me the correct calculations.

Looks to me like your result is OK and there is no correct answer between those given - that's assuming we are solving question as you posted it ;)

Thank you Borek.  I just clarified the question with my teacher, and it is correct as written, I JUST DONT GET IT!! errrr

Then we can only wait till your homework is due and then ask for the correct solution. I wonder how your teacher is going to get one of the answers listed.
