Interpreting IRs
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:49:28 PM »
I have gone to the website http://riodb01.ibase.aist.go.jp/sdbs/cgi-bin/direct_frame_top.cgi which has been highly recommended for IRs.

I have found the compound I need to identify.

I am trying to determine various bonds, ie. C=O, etc.  I notice there is a box at the bottom of the IR Spec. which has information for specific wavelengths (I assume) but I can't find an index or anything to tell me what the numbers represent.  For example, I see 3600 (which I assume is the wavelength) and then a second number like 44 beside it (not sure what this is).

Anyone familiar with this site?

The first number (3600) is the wavenumber (frequency) in cm-1 and the next number (40) is relative to the intensity (measured in % Transmittance - converted from absorbance) of the observed peak on a scale from 0-100 from bottom to top.

Check this page for some spectroscopy problems. Basic knowledge of IR spectroscopy is addressed in problems 3,4,7,13,15,18. See also some of the structure determination problems in 20.
