Nernst equation
« on: September 24, 2007, 05:31:30 AM »
Hi i have done the working out for this question and i just cant get the answer that is required:
1. Calculate the potential of the following cell at 298K:
Pt / H+(aq) (0.00176 mol/L) / H2(g) 1.00 bar // Cu2+(aq) (0.561 mol/L) / Cu
useful data:
2 H+(aq) + 2 e-  H2(g) Eo = 0.00 V

Cu2+(aq) + 2 e-  Cu(s) Eo = 0.340 V

My working:
Eo=Ecell - RT/nF[lnQ]
=(0.340-0.00) - 8.314x298/2x96485[ln 0.00176/0.561]
=0.340--0.0740
=0.414V

supposedly the answer is 0.495V can somebody please tell me what i am doing wrong
