« on: October 02, 2007, 11:57:54 AM »
hey guys well im really stuck with this question any help would be greatly appreciated! :

An industrial plant that specializes in cleaning up waste liquids is confronted with a problem of separating the metal ions found in a large vat of solution. By analysis, the solution was found to contain varying quantities of silver, barium, and iron (III) ions. Suggest a procedure for separating the metal ions by precipitation.

find a chart such as this. I am sure your teacher or book must have one.

Then look for a common anion that will precipitate with only 1 of them (a.k.a. it is soluble with 2, but insoluble with one of the cations you need to separate). Filter this out of the solution.
After that you will have only a mixture of 2 cations left. Find another anion that will precipitate with only one of these 2 and you will have them separated.
