Hey, i've been trying to find this in text books and on the internet, is this an out dated term, i haven't been able to find any good references to it?

I need to find the spin-orbit states of some elements, the first being:

 Na. [Ne]3p1

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Dear UbikPkd,

You may call it this way, but your example must be wrong (at least in my mind).

For me:   Na(11) = [Ne] 3s1 =  [He]2s2 2p6 3s1 =  1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
And:       Nb(41) = [Kr]  4d4 5s1
But:        Zr(40) = [Kr]  4d2 5s2

Do you agree with me?  - But please keep “Pauling Rule” in mind

P.S.: I call it simply “Electron-Configuration” of the Elements.

I don't think it's the same as electronic configuration, that'd be too simple to be true unfortunately  ;)

I think it might have been a type error in the case of Na, sorry i didnt notice that. It can't be asking for the electronic configurations because that's what it's already given me, but correctly for the others.

I'll give another one: F. [He] 2s2, 2p5

It's asking for the "spin-orbit states" and as you can see, it's kindly given me the electronic configuration.
I had an idea that it might be asking for me to go:

F. [He] 2s2 2px2 2py2 2pz1

hmmm....  :-\

ah i think i know what its asking for! Them boxes with the up/ down arrows, applying hunds rule of maximum multiplicity  ::)

SORRY!, - that I labelled the Rule with the wrong name of the Person!
Of course that I had in mind in this case the important saying of Mr. Friedrich Hund!
But the whole thing is anyway called the “Electron-Configuration” of the Elements.

But you would be the FIRST who is able to REALLY distinguish the three p-Orbitals this way to give a Rule what Orientation has to be filled first.  In this case you should be nominated for the next Nobel-Price in Chemistry/Physics.

Sorry for my fault anyway.
