Question about nomenclature of thiols
« on: October 10, 2007, 06:49:49 PM »
I have been reading some online text about thiol nomenclature but I do not understand when I would use -thiol suffix versus mercapto-prefix. Can anyone help with this problem please?

I'd go with -thiol.  I'm pretty sure that mercapto- is an outdated suffix and has been replaced by -thiol

Check IUPAC rules.  I agree mercapto- is outdated, somewhat like the term olefin for alkenes, but I have seen mercapto- used on Aldrich chemicals.  I think that when sulfur is the major functional group naming ends in thiol, but when it is a substituent with lesser priority it is referred to as #-mercapto.
