Concentration of Ammonia
« on: October 16, 2007, 04:05:39 PM »
Little more clarification please.

Question: If 5g of Ammonium chloride(NH4Cl) is diuted in 100ml of water, what is the concentration of Ammonia (NH3) as Nirogen in mg/L.

By the way does this equation represent the reaction.

2NH4Cl + H20 -------- 2HCl + 2NH3 + H20.

Any help is appreciated.

Dear Baba

The concentration of NH3 as Nitrogen is the same as concentration of NH4Cl as Nitrogen (because just one N is added to the solution).
53,5g NH4Cl (1 mole NH4Cl)have 14g N (one mole of N)
5g                                x

x = 5*14/53,5(g)
Concentration = x/100 (g/ml)
Good luck,

By the way does this equation represent the reaction.

2NH4Cl + H20 -------- 2HCl + 2NH3 + H20.

This reaction represents the reaction of NH4Cl hydrolysis, but its yield in water is below 1 %. For simple calculation of solution concentration you do not need write down any reaction
