need help with some intro chem stuff
« on: October 20, 2007, 05:08:35 PM »
hello chemists

im taking an intro to chemistry class at my college and need help with the concepts of polar and non polar molecules. Am i right so far? that polar molecules have electric dipoles which are a positive and negative ends and are separated in the molecule and that non polar molecules have there positive and negative ends coinciding on top of each other. So how can i find out idf a molecule is polar or non polar? is it possible with lewis structures?

Dear Equation33,

Sorry! But the "Lewis Structure" is not telling you anything about the absolutely required “Geometrical Structure” of the Molecule.
Only if knowing the “Geometrical Structure” of H-O-H you are able to understand why water is polar.
The same is true to realise, that O=C=O is the opposite; it is NON-polar, because both polar centres are finally located at exactly the identical place.
For any calculation a table containing the “Electronegativity” of all Atomes is required.
One Example of such a table you may find under:

Good Luck!
