What are some side reactions that could occur with a diels-alder reaction using 1,3-butadiene and maleic anhydride under reflux?

This should be a straight forward reaction. Side products depend on your reaction conditions. Draw both reactants and identify where the pericyclic reaction occurs.

I'm trying to write up the lab report and it asks us to list significant side reactions. The diene is obtained from a decomposition of 3-sulfolene. The entire thing is basically just heated. Would anything react with the xylene solvent?

1,3-butadiene can polymerise for one thing. Also it's possible for butadiene to undergo Diels-Alder reactions with itself as the dieneophile, althoug it's a much poorer dieneophile than maleic anhydride of course.
