Density Of Elements
« on: November 02, 2007, 07:09:18 PM »
Questions is:"Why is the range of densities much greater among the nonmetals than among the metals?(Hint: The densities listed are for elements at 0 degrees celsius)".
The metal elements that were listed were Lithium(Li).534, Sodium (Na).971, Potassium(K).862, Rubidium (Rb)1.532, and Cesium(Cs)1.873. The Non Metals that were listed were Fluorine(F).00181, Chlorine(Cl).003214, Bromine(Br)3.12, and Iodine (I)4.93. The numbers listed after the element are the densities. Can anyone help me out???

hello BigDanny
the law of density is d=m/v
d:density , m:mass of atom  , v: atomic volume
in general the volume of metals if bigger than the nonmetal
so,the volume increase which decrease the value of density
and the opposite with nonmetals
Thanks
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and i bear witness that Mohamed is the messenger of Allah.

Quite the opposite. In general metals are more dense then nonmetals which means they occupy smaller volume for the same mass.

Density of solids depends on type of crystal packing. Alkali metals are far from close packing.
