Alkane Nomenclature
« on: November 08, 2007, 01:35:50 PM »
Which of these is the proper name for the molecule? Why?

1) 4-ethyl-2-methylheptane

2) 4-isobutyl-heptane

(Both describe the same structure.)

I believe it is 1) b/c it is "more substituted," but I have never seen this rule written anywhere.

Look closely, one of the names is wrong.  You have named two heptane chains, one has 3 more carbons, and one has 4, thus they can't be the same thing.  Remember to go with the longest parent chain.

I'm sorry .. my mistake ... I meant:

1) 4-propyl-2-methylheptane

2) 4-isobutyl-heptane

That should be the same molecule. Which name is correct?

How about 2-methyl-4-propylheptane?  Remember to alphabetize.  That's the one I'd go with
