HCL 36%
« on: July 02, 2007, 10:41:59 PM »
Dear Gurus and all, :)

I am new to chemistry world and have questions in mind for HCL 36%. I do appreciate and glad if you all can contribute to this thread. Please feel free to do so.

Given HCL 36%
- Store and contained within a 200Litre drum,
- 3/4 full,
- Vapor do not escape from the drum,
- Travels in containers, containers expose to direct sunlight for 3 weeks,
- Lastly store in the warehouse at 22 degree C.
-(the drums will be bloated but no vapor escape)
- When arranging the drums for sampling checks, while opening the drum cap, there will be fumes coming out for at least 10 secs. Samples will be then drawn from the drum.

My questions are
- Will the Assay of the HCL 36% dropped at its final destination?
- If dropped, what are the characteristic of the HCL36% that causes this drop?

Do kindly let me know if you requires more information from me. :)

Thank You So Much. :)
Sibie.

Interpretation of this problem depends on precision of your eventual calculations.
Muriatic acid forms an azeotrope with water contaiing abour 20 % HCl, hence gas over acid in drum contains more HCl than in a solution. After opening the drum some HCl will be lost. But, does it matter to you, if an overall concentration drops by, say, 10-4 % ?

Thanks for replying.

Kindly see my reply in blue.

If the HCL36% contains in a drum and tightly closed, the drum is 5/6 filled with HCL 36%. The drum placed under direct sunlight, will the gas over acid in drum contains more HCl than in a solution?

My HCL36% states 36.2% but when I sent for lab test, the result shows 35.9%. I am not sure why it drops more than 10-4 %

Please enlighten me.

Thank You So Much,
Sibie

Technical HCl has a cocentration about 36 %. This is difficult to determine precisely concentration of such concentrated muriatic acid, precision is usually around +- 0.5 %

Yes, it is diffcult to determine the muriatic acid concentration.

By the way, I would like to learn more from you. When precision is mentioned usually around +-0.5%, how can we validate on it? I mean is there any data to show.

Thank you so much,
Sibie.

Does it really matter with such technical acid? It can be any concentration between 35% and 37%. The loss will only be marginal if you open such a drum, probably only a few times 0.01% of HCl.

Dear forummers,

Thanks for all the thoughts been given to me.  :)

Due to customer requirement, the level of assay is very important.

I have found out that the dip in assay is due to lab test method.

The acid was pour directly into the breaker without any water in it. Thus caused a quantity amount of assay evapourated.

Looking forward to learn more from you all.

Thanks.
Sibie.
