chemistry problem
« on: November 22, 2007, 01:37:51 AM »
what is:

The common name, chemical name, and chemical formula of the salt produced when magnesium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid. Balanced equation also required. No need to provide a sample.

ok, so far i have  ;D

Common name - Epsom salt
Chemical name - Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate
Chemical formula - MgSO4 + 7H2O

all i need is the balanced equation..

my partner tells me its:
Mg(OH)2 + H2SO4 = MgSO4 + 2H2O

but shouldn't that 2H2O be 7H2O like in the chemical formula above?  ???

thanks

MgSO4 + 7H2O should be MgSO4.7H2O

Do not bother with 7H2O - this hydrate is formed during crystallization from water solution
