Polar and Non-Polar
« on: December 11, 2007, 09:44:49 PM »
I want to know a good way to determine polarity without using electronegativity. Also, using the idea of Metal and Non-Metal doesnt help either.

Here are some examples. "Which of the following molecules are nonpolar"

1) H20
2) HOClO3
3) CHCl3
4) HCN
5) BCL3

I would say BCl3 would be nonpolar because it's atomic structure is symmetrical, and no lone pair of electrons around boron.

Find whether each compound is symmetrical or not, and if it's not, it is polar.
