drying anisole
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:30:06 PM »
hi! I am trying to dry anisole about 200ml for reactions. I use sodium / benzophenone. but problem is at a high temp. sodium melts and its really difficult to distill it at a low pressure with sodium still inside the flask. can anybody help me by providing a good procedure to dry and distill anisole? :'(

I guess you need very pure anisole. I would try to use calcium hydride, as it is a very effective drying agent, that doesn't melt. Refluxing for 3-4 h should be enough.
