Electrochemical Cell & Reference electrode
« on: February 27, 2008, 06:01:51 AM »
Hello.

I'm a physicist and have a question about electrochemistry which unfortunately I know very little about.

In a three electrochemical cell configuration (working electrode, reference electrode and counter/auxilliary electrode) what metals are suitable as the reference electrode?

Currently I have Au as my working electrode, Pt as my counter electrode however I do not have any silver available for the reference electrode. Are there metals other than silver that are suitable for my reference electrode (Would Pt be suitable as it is inert?).

Thanks!

Reference can't be inert. Ag/AgCl or SCE are easiest to use, although the second contains mercury.
