Oxidation numbers

Determine the oxidation number of the specified element in each of the following.
a)N in NF
3
b)S in S
8
c)Cr in CrO
4
2-
d)P in P
2
O
5
e)C in C
12
H
22
O
11
f)C in CHCl
3
I don't understand the concept. Can someone help explain it and then I'll try posting the possibly right answers. Thanks.

Well, you can start with the textbook definition, or maybe you can draw the electron dot structures of these molecules?

It looks like a lot, but it really probably a lot simpler then you are trying to make it.
