Analysis of volatile organic compounds?
« on: March 09, 2008, 11:09:06 PM »
Hey, just wondering, but what would be the best, fastest method to analyze volatile organic compounds that may be present in water?

I'm thinking GC-FID or GC-PID, and also headspace.

Try solid phase micro extraction + GC. See the following web page:

Dear Redskytonight820;

Like ETOX I prefer the GC-MS combination, because you have both at once: Concentration and ‘Identification’.

If ‘Accumulation’ in Concentration (e.g. from Headspace) is required, also as micro extraction, think about a “Cool-Trap” on the in-let for better Separation and deeper “Detection Limits”!

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone, you've been so helpful... but seeing as how like FID is the only thing available in my lab, I think I'll be forced to use this :(
