Dipole moment of BF3
« on: March 11, 2008, 11:17:46 PM »
Hi friends,

I'm utterly confused about the dipole-moment vector arrows in my text book.Generally it's said while showing dipole moments directions it's directed from +ve to -ve but in case of BF3 it's directed from F (which's partially -ve due to high E.N) to Boron(which's partial positive).I'd be obliged if someone describe ne the correct directions of Dipole moment vectors in BF3.Thanks.

I'm not sure why the dipole-moment vectors would be pointing towards the Boron.  Unless I'm forgetting some exception regarding lewis acids, they should definitely be pointing towards the Flourines.  By the way, what does ve stand for?

Take into account the geometry and the shape of BF3

I think it's a note-taking shortcut (or part of one): +ve == positive, -ve == negative. Could be wrong...

Hi friends,

Thanks for infos. It was just printing error which confused me.Dipole moment arrows point from B to Flourine as I've checked from another book.U're right +ve & -ve imply for positive & negative respectively.Thanks.
