What's the mol of electron
« on: March 23, 2008, 05:01:58 PM »
When enough NaCl(s) is added to the compartment containing gold to make the [Cl–] = 0.10 M, the cell potential is observed to be 0.31 V.  Assuming that the reaction in the gold compartment is
Au(3+)(aq) + 4Cl–(aq) --> AuCl4–(aq)
Calculate the value of K for this reaction at 25°C.

I think I'm hitting a chemistry brain freeze. Um can anyone tell me what "n" would be as in what is the number for the mol of electrons?

From the description you have Au/Au3+ electrode.

oh so its 3 mols of electron. I'm planning on using nearnst equation.

Can anyone help me find what Q would be?

Q=   [AuCl4-]/ [Au] [Cl]^4

I'm not sure waht the concentration would be

Write expression for K, solve for Au3+.

Write Nernst equation for Au/Au3+ electrode.

Put calculated Au3+ into Nernst equation.
