dehydrohalogenation: basic??
« on: March 30, 2008, 02:32:13 PM »
I have a random conceptual question that I've been wondering about....

Why can dehydrohalogenation occur under basic conditions?

Most of the reactions we are studying occur much better under acidic conditions... but dehydrohalogenation (E2) seems to be mainly basic... any ideas?

What are the requirements for an E2 reaction?
