Limonene + Chitin = ?
« on: April 19, 2008, 03:10:15 PM »
New to the forums.

Anyway I'm doing an earth day project for my chemistry class. My project topic is Alternatives to Pesticides. After doing some research, I've found Limonene, a substance found in orange oils and citric fruits - kills ants on the spot. An ants body is made out of Chitin. Limonene kills the ant by melting the Chitin closing off the air holes, thus suffocating it.

Therefore:

C10H16(limonene) + C8H13O5N(chitin) ->  ?

Thanks in advance =).

No idea what is really happening, but you can be sure it is not that simple and you won't be able to write simple reaction equation.
