Why is the hydrolysis of a fat called saponification?

The process is called saponification instead of hydrolysis because soap is formed.  Does anyone have a better suggestion cause I'm not 100% sure.  Is that right?

sorry, misread this altogether  ;D

dictionary says the etymology is french, might want to look for someone fluent  ;D
