Causes for your pen to explode.
« on: April 16, 2005, 09:15:02 PM »
Every week i find a exploded pen in my pants pocket. It happens to me very often like once a week so i have to buy cheap pens and alot of them. It is probably from my body heat that caused it. Some say its pressure... hmm I dont quite understand why. I thought of using PV=nRT but can't really make sense of it... im not very sure haha.

From my experience its from motion as well as heat, if you take a cheap gel pen and flick it around or shake it, it may 'explode'. But then also on hot days you'll find your best pen has just decided to spill its guts.

I've had this happen to me when I take certain kinds of pens onto airplanes.  It doesn't always happen though.  I think it's most likely from the change in pressure, but I'm not certain.

Cheap pens have a tendency to explode. Simple solution by a more expensive ballpoint pen. Not fountain pen. Or just get a pocket protector.
