Difference between carbonyl and acyl?
«

What is the difference?
Is a acyl chloride considered a carbonyl? Why or why not?
Is an ester, aldehyde, etc considered an acyl? Why or why not?
Thanks very much.

Acyl simply is notation for a certain functional group.

An acyl chloride group is a carbonyl, it just has a chlorine attached to it. Aldehydes are acyl groups with a hydrogen. I suppose they could be called acyl hydrides, maybe? But they're used so often, they referred to as an aldehyde.
