treating slica surface to get carboxylic acid
« on: May 05, 2008, 07:12:40 PM »
Hello. I need to develop a method to get carboxylic acid groups on a silica surface.  The silica surface has OH groups off of it.  What can I treat these OH groups with to get a primary alcohol?  After I obtain this primary alcohol I can oxidize it with permanganate to get carboxylic acid.  Anyt thoughts?  Are there any papers out there about this?

I have been reading up on this and it seems I first have to perform silanization on the surface to go from Si-OH to get thiol groups.  My question is now I need to convert these SH groups to primary alcohols which I can then get carboxylic acid from.  Although I cannot find any methods of going from SH to RCH2OH.  Any thoughts on how I can do this?
