Have I busted my ion exchange column? :(
« on: May 14, 2008, 02:14:36 PM »
Hi there,

What happens to the column if I change the flow direction by accident? Ion exchange column BTW. The eluent was passing in the wrong direction for 45 mins at 0.8mL/min. Have I just busted my column???  :(

Just goes to show how one should be aware in the lab!
Sugar chemistry... sweet or sour?

What is the type of column? What is the typical flow rate you use, solvent, etc etc.

It can damage some. But then again that is the best method for cleaning many columns, run (usually a different solvent) through backwards.

You can (and if are really concerned should) test the column with a standard solution and see if it performs as specified.
