solubility q's
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:27:22 PM »
Just wondering in which of the following, if any, that NaHCO3 was soluble in.
vanillin, benzoic acid, and propanol

I did solubility experiments in class, but I'm starting to think I saw what I was supposed to see. (we only used like 0.5-1 mL of each in a test tube =/)

I have NaHCO3 as nonsoluble in vanillin and benzoic acid, but soluble in propanol. However, we use sodium bicarb to neutralize acid spills all the time, why doesn't it react with benzoic acid?

I have another one solubility q, same 3 as above, except instead of NaHCO3, we look at NaOH. I have this as soluble in all three of the above. Why is NaOH soluble in propanol? What makes 2 alcohols soluble w/ each other?

As far as I remember, vanilin and benzoic acids are solids. How do you can dissolve a solid NaHCO3 in them.
Benzoic acid should react with NaHCO3 in water solution.
Solid NaHCO3 is insoluble in propanol

NaOH will react with vanilin and benzoic acid, even in solid state (without any solvent)

NaOH is soluble in  lower alcohols,  but in any case NaOH is not an alcohol
