What alcohol would have a yellow color?
« on: May 27, 2008, 04:39:30 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm trying to identify a compound and based on my IR, I have an alcohol (absorption at 3250-3500nm). It's not a carbonyl compound, because I don't have an absorption band at 1710nm. The color of the liquid is yellow, but there is an alcohol group on it. The only alcohols that I know of have clear colors to them. Anyone have any ideas as to what my unknown may be?

Thanks

Some nitro species are yellow in color.  I know for a fact that 3-(4-nitrophenyl)propan-1-ol is yellow in color cause I was doing a synthesis with it.  In fact, any variation in the functional -OH was yellow in color (the bromide, iodide, the aldehyde, etc...)
