pchem concepts help
« on: February 06, 2008, 02:22:16 PM »
I feel that it's much easier to do pchem hw problems by understanding the concepts first...but i'm kinda lost right now..so please help me explaining these as simple as possible:

1. Rate law (really confused about this b/c i thought that rate = k[a] for 2A + 5B -> C since it doesn't depend on the stoichiometric coefficients...oh yeah...so the rate must be the rate for d[c]/dt?
2. Reaction order (so for sure this is independent of stoichio. coefficients, yeah. So basically this is just about which reactant participates in the reaction?...whether it's 0, 1st, 2nd, 3rd order?
3. Maxwell distribution of speeds: how do i know the most probable speed and the average speed on a curve?
4. Elementary & consecutive reactions
5. rate-determining step, steady-state approximation, pre-equilibria
6. diffusion control
7. Michaelis-Menten mechanism

I seriously need help..

OK that is huge...that is a few lectures of material....even going back to my teaching outlines....What book do you use?  I would highly recommend one of the following:

Physical Chemistry Text Books

P. W.Atkins
Ira N. Levine
Keith James Laidler, John H. Meiser, Bryan C. Sanctuary
Robert J. Silbey, Robert A. Alberty, Moungi G. Bawendi

I am very partial to Atkins and/or Levine...But Laidler is very good too...

Try this index...it has many slide shows/tutorials: http://www.roanestate.edu/faculty/condon/slideshows/

What is huge is you signature girl! I am going to have to create a GreaseMonkey script to ignore your signature so I do not have to scroll so much.

HHHMMM..never say I am not tenacious....here this site is dedicated to Physical Chemistry tutorials....each subject you mention is covered specifiaclly....I see your point....the other site is not yet complete they are adding to it all the time....This is more advanced..

http://www.chemlin.net/chemistry/physical_chemistry.htm

Also this site has webbbased P-Chem turorils for 1st year college students:

http://www.chem1.com/chemed/tutorial.shtml

Your questions revolve around chemical kinetics...so this is a good resource:

http://www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/software/download/

Then this is all about reaction order and rate laws:

http://www2.wwnorton.com/college/chemistry/gilbert/tutorials/ch14.htm

This one is excellent-click on the KINETICS link in the small aqua links at the top

http://www.mindspring.com/~drwolfe/WWWolfe_hcc_1046_links.htm

Hope these help...I know you have books...whenever I had a problem with a subject I would go check many souces...eventually I would find the right fit...I about had cardiac arrest in DiffEQ II 67 page book...OMG..should have seen the line outside the profs door...

YOU WILL MAKE IT THRU P-CHEM....just keep a positive attitude...it is all in the units...
