how to change the c-12 scale?
« on: June 02, 2008, 01:36:56 AM »
hi all

I have one qeustion.

How to change the C-12 scale to other scale eg other mass ??

Let say based on C-12 scale, oxygen has a mass of 16. Waht is the relative atomic mass based on chlorine (35.7)?

Thanks for the advice.

hey missaturn,

Use the actual mass of an atom divide by the actual mass of a chlorine atom. (or 1/x of the actual mass of a chlorine atom, if you wish)

But first you need to find out 1u = how much kg

Try this link out on why Carbon-12 http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00639.htm

Do I need to use the "u" for the calculation?

Is it enough to use the "Use the actual mass of an atom divide by the actual mass of a chlorine atom" for the calculation?

Yes

Do I need to use the "u" for the calculation?

You need to covert u to the actual mass of an atom(you wish to compared against chlorine) and the actual mass of a chlorine atom in Kg, because 1u has been defined as 1/12 the mass of an atom of a C-12.

Hi

Do I have to divided by the mass of one atom chlorine or 1/x of Cl?
What is the x value? 335 or still 12?

hey!

Did you check out the link?

It's actually based on convention, you can define your own "u" as an atom of Cl-35 or 1/35 of Cl-35. It's up to you, but i would say chlorine is not a good element to compare against with.

Out of curiousity, what are you doing that for?
