IR ?
« on: June 01, 2008, 08:55:26 PM »
Why does methyl benzoate have a small peak around 3400-3500? Please see sdbs.org for the spectrum.

There is no O-H or N-H stretch so what can it be?

Thanks.

Based on the size of the peak, it could be contamination from the hydrolysis of methyl benzoate.

Right. So that is a way you would be able to get an O-H stretch, from either the benzoic acid or methanol.

Thanks.
