Calculating Temperature of Converision
« on: June 10, 2008, 08:26:27 PM »
Elemental sulfur can exist in two crystalline forms, rhombic and monoclinic. Calculate the temperature for the conversion of monoclinic sulfur to rhombic sulfur given the following data:

Substance   ΔHfº (kJ/mol)   Sº (J/K•mol)

S(rhombic)   0   31.73

S(monoclinic)   0.30   32.55

Help would be greatly appreciated with how to tackle this question. I have a feeling it is easy and I know how to do it but the answer and way is eluding me at the moment. Thanks in advance

What happens to the change in free energy when the rhombic and monoclinic forms are in equilibrium?

Is it just the difference in entropy - products - reactants???

Start with the definition for change in free energy (ΔG).

You'll need the free energy of formation for these as well.  delta G for rhombic sulfur is 0kj/mol and for monoclinic it is 0.1kj/mol.
