Cyclone for Solid-Gas separation

Can anyone advise regarding the following questions about the operating of Cyclones used for Solid-Gas separation:
 
1 - Has the vent stream of the cyclone to be with a downward slope towards the vessel-receiver?  What is the common practice?
 
2 - How sensitive is the separation to the changes in the particle size of the powder?  Any co-relations for that?

For me it should be backward to facilitate particles drop back to cyclone.

Efficiency varies linearly with the Log(Dp) from 1 to 10 micron size & it is much flatter outside this range. So if particle size increases, the efficiency increases by a factor of log(Dp2/Dp1)...Simple.
