Solve it how? I mean, you already have something equal to something else. Where are you trying to go with it?

The problem just says "Derive this formula." This is from Chandler's Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics, problem 1.9

Are you sure in that hint that the last partial derivative is not supposed to be (partial Z / partial Y) at constant X times dy?

I PDF'd it. I am already pissed enough. I just wrote it out and planned on scanning it, but just found out my scanner is broke! I hate doing forumals on a computer, so hopefully I did not skip to much for you when typing it up.

divide by 'dy' while keeping z constant . A simple rearrangement yields the relation.
