I was wondering how you could synthesize 1-pentanol using propylmagnesium bromide atleast once in the synthesis. You need to show all reagents used in each step.

What kind of compounds do you know that form alcohols when attacked by a grignard reagent?  There are a few different ones.

I tried using ethanal but that ended up giving me 2-pentanol instead of 1-pentanol. I can't seem to figure out how the alcohol group would be on the first carbon.

thanks for the help

You got the molecular formula right, you just need to find the correct isomer.

Correction; for the ethanal that is, try looking for symmetric possibilities :)

Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

Not sure if this a theoretical or practical problem.

For a theoretical problem, propylmagnesium bromide reaction with epoxyethane (the simplest of epoxides) to yield 1-pentanol.

I am not sure how practical this is, but...
